10 Natural and Home Remedies to Manage Melasma Symptoms

Melasma is a common health disorder in which one develops discolored brown or blue-gray patches or freckled spots on the skin. It mostly affects the cheeks, nose, forehead, neck, jawline, and forearms. The condition is also termed the “mask of pregnancy” because it tends to affect pregnant women more. Melasma often worsens in the summer months and improves during winter.

10 Natural and Home Remedies to Manage Melasma Symptoms
Natural remedies like aloe vera, cucumber, and turmeric help heal the skin and manage symptoms.

Best natural remedies and home treatments for melasma
This chronic skin condition causes hyperpigmentation, triggering irregular patches on the skin. Here, the body overproduces melanin, a pigment responsible for one’s skin color. Melasma can usually fade on its own in a few months, but for that to happen, one must take proper care of one’s skin health and follow remedies that help lighten the skin and reduce pigmentation.

1) Aloe vera
A succulent plant known for its medicinal properties, aloe vera acts as a soothing natural gel for the skin. It has been traditionally used for healing and moisturizing and is widely used in skincare and wound treatments. One can use fresh aloe vera gel and massage it on one’s face and affected areas for a few minutes. Then, it’s best to leave it on for 10-15 minutes before washing it off with clean water.

2) Onion
This common household veggie has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Its components make onion one of the most effective home remedies for many skin issues, like redness, spotting, breakouts, blemishes, and acne. Onions are generally considered safe to use for melasma spots. One can dab some onion juice onto a cotton ball and apply it to the face. Leave it on for a few minutes before washing it off. One can also use the dried peels of red onions to lighten the spots.

3) Licorice extract
The active ingredients found in licorice tend to reduce melasma-induced hyperpigmentation. Its components help prevent dark spots, remove existing melanin patches, and reduce inflammation.

4) Cucumber
As a naturally cooling vegetable, cucumber is known to have soothing and hydrating properties. The main symptoms of melasma are hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Cucumbers not only help get rid of pigmentation but also soothe any skin irritation. Just cut up a few pieces of cucumber and gently rub on the skin. Then, leave them on for about 20 minutes before cleaning the face.

5) Lemon
The citrus fruit is another home remedy one can use to lighten melasma patches. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent known to help with many skin issues that cause hyperpigmentation. To use it effectively, one can apply lemon juice on the spots and leave it on for a few minutes before washing them off with clean water. One may have to use this remedy consistently to observe some results. Also, studies are yet to prove the effectiveness of lemon in treating melasma since it also has acidic properties and may be harsh on the skin. So, it is best to consult a health expert before opting for this natural remedy.

6) Turmeric
A spice that boasts a long history of use in healthcare, turmeric is a useful remedy for many skin disorders. It contains curcumin, an antioxidant that helps fade spots and soothe skin. One can combine a pinch of turmeric powder with milk and apply the mixture to the affected areas. After it dries out, wash off the pack with clean, lukewarm water.

7) Green tea extract
One effective home remedy for lightening dark spots caused by melasma is applying green tea bags directly to the affected area. One can steep a green tea bag in boiled water for a few minutes, let it cool, and gently rub it over the affected areas.

8) Protective gear
Melasma is triggered by hormonal imbalances and other factors, but flares usually worsen with exposure to UV rays. So, it’s advised to wear protective gear like anti-glare sunglasses, a cap, and gloves while going out during the daytime. One can also apply two layers of sunscreen to ensure proper sun protection and minimize the risk of melasma flares.

9) Choose natural and unscented products
Scented soaps, body wash, or fragrances may also trigger or worsen melasma issues, so it’s best to avoid these products that can irritate the skin and instead opt for natural products.

10) Manage stress
Another factor that can trigger the condition is stress. Techniques like therapy, meditation, yoga, exercise, and other suitable methods can help one manage stress, alleviate flares, and treat melasma at home.

As mentioned earlier, in many cases, melasma disappears on its own, but there are no guarantees that the spots won’t return later. So, be cautious and consistent with the remedies and consult a healthcare professional if one notices melasma symptoms. It’s also advised to seek a doctor’s help before opting for any of these home remedies, as they can prescribe better treatment tailored to one’s needs, like creams that suit one’s skin type. In some instances, melasma may also result from underlying conditions like thyroid disease. If diagnosed in time and at an early stage, the condition can be managed more effectively and also show better results.
